Animals. . .Neither child knew what the word meant, exactly, but it was often used to describe someone uneducated or clumsy, someone who didn't fit in.
Reaction: Why don't they know what animals are? They've seen a salmon before and that is an animal. Are animals not allowed in their community? Are salmons the only animals they allow?Animals are the most important way of our living. They are used fo food, some for transportation, and other as pets.Sure they aren't the only things that keeps us alive but they are the most useful.

Quote: (pg.15 )
"But to be honest, Jonas," his father said, "for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be."
Reaction: Why do they have to be assigned a job at just age twelve? At that age they are still just kids and aren't ready for that much responsibility.Even though they help out in the job that fasinates them most since age eight but they just help out not learn anything. Why did the the father know what his assignment was going to be?Did he secretly hear the elders disscus it?Or did he just spend all his hours there?

The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand,
and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere.
The same nondescript shade.
Reaction: What changed about the apple? It most likely changed to him because of the movement it made when being bounced.Thats why when he held it in his hands it was normal. But if it was being bounced it might have changed it shape because it was hitting the ground. When it hit the ground some of it might have fallen off or got bruised. So it couldn't be the exact same way it was before. Vocabulary: (pg.20)
Chastisement: a talk when you do something wrong-" she would be called in for chastisement because of her insensitive chatter."
Chapter 4

What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go?
Reaction: This quote got me very curious because they are right where do the released people go?Do they get released because they have died?Or are they still alive when they released them?Where do they go?Do they go to another place beyond their community? No one actually knows for sure just like the old woman said.

Reaction: What exactly are these "stirrings"?Are they the dreams you get?Or are they feeling you get?If they are feelings does he have to take the pills to control it?Is it reguarding the dream he had about Fiona?Do you have to take these pills?I know i wouldn't like to take these pills because then you will always be happy.

Dwelling: a place where you live-" Then, in the same way that his own dwelling slipped away behind him as he rounded a corner on his bicycle..." Chapter 6
Quote: (pg.43)
It was as if the first Caleb were returning.
Reaction: This quote got me really upset.Their first child Caleb one day wondered off and fell into the river.Caleb drowned and obviously died. Then the same parents go to a ceremony and they recieve a new baby named Caleb. How can they do that to them?Sure it will be like having first Caleb but it won't be the same. You can't just replace a child because they're different since no child can be exactly the same. Not even twins are the same because they both will have something different about them. I know if this was to happen to one of my family members I would get upset. Vocabulary: (pg.41)
Relinquish: to give up or back-"they would relinquish him without protest or appeal."
Chapter 7
Quote: (pg.53)
He couldn't seem to stop, though for each lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually, for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when he was a Three.
Reaction: What kind of teacher hits a little kid for every little mistake he does?He is just a three year old and not all kids are perfect. You don't see all three year olds talking perfectly.Well... at least i don't.she should just correct him instead. She also has no rights to be hitting him especially with a weapon.I think the only time to hit a child is if does something rally dangerous.
Vocabulary: (pg.53)
precision: to be exact-"precision of language was one of the most important tasks of small children." Chapter 8 Quote: (pg.57)
Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory.
Reaction: What does the receiver of memory exactly do?It must be something very important because they say it is the most important job.At least the most important in their community. What makes this job so different from the normal jobs?Do you get to have something special that nobody else has?Well nobody will know for sure until we read the next chapter.
Vocabulary: (pg.59)
integrity: honesty-"Jonas has, like all of us,commited minor transgressions."
Chapter 9
Quote: (pg.64)
"What happened to her?"he asked nervously.
But his parents looked blank. "We don't know."
Reaction: What did happen to her?All they said was she failed to be the reciever of memory and she was released.Did she go to a community far away? Was she punished before they released her?Did she do something wrong and that is why she failed?Did it involve her stealing something? Why do they never mention her name?Is it because of the shame that she failed?I guess we just have to read the next chapter to find out.
Vocabulary: (pg.66)
Exempted: ?-"The exemption from rudeness startled him."
Chapter 10 Quote: (pg.71)
He couldn't imagine what the thousands of pages contained.
Reaction: Why can't everyone see those books in there? The only books they've ever seen are the ones at school. At school they only have rule books. Is it because of the change of everything?Since before they had stuff they don't have now?Why didn't they keep everything like it was before?Maybe they will talk about it later on in the book.
Vocabulary: (pg.71)
Conspicuous: notiable-"But the most conspicuous difference was the books." Chapter 11
Quote: (pg.80)
"Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?"
Reaction: The only reason they don't have any of that is because of the climate control. They use the climate control because in the winter it was hard to transportation and to grow crops. This is time that they need animals because then they could make warm clothes and have food.Since they don't have any animals they had to worry about not being able to grow crops. If I was Jonas I would get really upset about their decisions.
Vocabulary: (pg.78)
Perceived: figure out-"The swirl of what he now somehow, perceived was the thing the old man had spoken of..." Chapter 12
Quote: (pg.91)
"We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely.
Reaction: I agree with Jonas. Why does everything in their community have to be the same? The world would be so boring if it was actually like that. There wouldn't be anything fun because everything is black and white.I bet their life would be so much more interesting if they had color. For example, they would like having different color of bicyles, enjoy lovely sunsets, colors of flowers, rainbows, and so much more. They should really have everything normal so they can enjoy life.Sure they did this to not have problems but the actual world is different.
Vocabulary: (pg.90)
Capacity: ability-"you have the capacity to see beyond."
Chapter 13
Quote: (pg.93)
"We really have to protect people from wrong choices."
Reaction: Why do they have to choose the way they live? I beleive they should be able to make their own choices. They will obviously make mistakes but it is part of life.We make mistakes since not everyone is perfect.Plus all of us learn a lesson from our mistakes.
Vocabulary: (pg.97)
Access: the right to use something-" You and I are the only ones with access to these books."
Chapter 14
Quote: (pg.105)
"They selected me and you to lift that burden from themselves."
Reaction: Why do they have to have just one receiver of memory?I would have more than one because it's not fair that only one person suffers with all that pain. It's wrong to have that person carry all those painful memories while everyone doesn't have any clue of it.Didn't they want sameness in their community?Well, there isn't because the receiver of memory suffers while they get more happiness without it.
Vocabulary: (pg.105) Excruciating: very painful-"..the hunger had caused excruciating spasms..."
Chapter 15
Quote: (pg.114)
The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said.
Reaction: Wow! Finally, someone in the book has an emotion. But why did he say to forgive him? It clearly said that the receiver has to go through pain.Anyways Jonas has to learn these memories in order to become the receiver. He will just have to get used to it because he will feel more pain in the memories later on. Or at least that is what the giver said. I feel sorry for Jonas I wouldn't be able to take all that pain.
Vocabulary: (pg.112)
Anguish: pain-"...that is such anguish The Giver might need reminding." Chapter 16
Quote: (pg.118)
"And they won't be part of my life anymore. . . And they'll be well cared for and respected."
Reaction: Why once their kids leave the parents have to go to a place where the other parents are? I think it is not fair once the kids get a job they have to move out, apply for a spouse, and after 3 years together apply for a child. Then after that they won't see their parents since they are so busy. If we were to live in that kind of community i would hate it since i wont be able to see my parents or siblings.
Vocabulary: (pg.120)
Obsolete: Forgotten-"...so meaningless that it's almost been obsolete."
Chapter 17
Quote: (pg.129)
"Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the newchild.
Reaction: He says it in a sweet voice like if he doesn't care.He makes it sound like if its no big deal. Why can't they keep both babies?I would keep both because i would hate realesing a baby to another community.Do they not keep both of them because they don't want to get confused? They don't want to get them mixed up because they will have different moms and they might one day take the wrong one.I think the best thing to do is to give both of them to the same mom.
Vocabulary: (pg.128) Overwhelmed: to be affected by an deep emotion
Chapter 18-19
I found these chapters very sad. After reading this I felt sorry for both Jonas and the giver. The giver because he had to give some of those painful memories to Rosemary.I bet it was cause she was a girl and because he loved her. That's why when he gave those memories to Jonas he felt sad too.For Jonas because he had to watch his own dad kill an inocent baby.At first he was all happy he was going to see a release for the first time but then he saw how they kill them. Why do they have to kill them like that?I felt really sad when I read how they had to kill the babies because it was more painful. It was more painful to the babies since they had to have the shot on the forehead than on the arm.
Chapter 20
Quote: (pg.152)
"Her name was Rosemary."
Reaction: When I read this quote I was really surpised. The giver had never mentioned her had a daughter until this chapter. When he mentioned that Rosemary was his daughter I finally understood why it hurt him giving her those painful memories.I feel sorry for him too because he watched when them killed hisown daughter. When he was talking about releasing people and how they released Rosemay really hurt him because he kept pausing and closing his eyes to not cry.

"First thing tomorrow morning."
Reaction: Why do they have to release Gabe just because he doesn't sleep well at night?Thats how babies are they aren't always silent. They have to cry during the night so they can change their diapers, eat, and be burped. I hate their community they always want everything to be perfect. Is Jonas going to escape now he know that they are going to realease Gabe? The only way I will find out is if I read the next chapter.
Vocabulary: (pg.153)

Chapter 22-23
The end of "The Giver" left me very surprised. It didn't have an ending like a usual story. It just left you saying "what happened to Jonas and Gabe"?The book left me with lots of theories and I am very confused between two good explanations. One of them is that Jonas finally got to the place beyond since he heard and saw things just like in the memories. But the last sentence said he might just have been ilusionating so,im not sure. The second one is that he might have gone in a circle and ended up in his community again and it changed since the memories go back to the community when the Receiver leaves.
